An Accutron 214 case gasket is a very important part which does much more than just create a seal between the cover and the bezel. When the gasket is installed the 12 specially designed inward pointing projections actually rest on a shoulder of the movement (see photos) and when compressed by the back cover they act like evenly spaced fingers which press the movement firmly against the bezel without the possibility of distortion.

The projections also serve to hold the gasket in perfect alignment with the sealing surfaces and make up for slight differences in the height of the shoulders. Note that the two projections next to the battery nest are spaced so that they complete the seal without interfering with the battery.

TIME SETTING PROBLEMS

The great majority of setting problems are caused either by over-tightening the back cover, or by a dried out case gasket which has lost it's elasticity and has been compressed until it has become too thin. To diagnose/fix this problem the back cover should be loosened until it backs out of the bezel enough for the setting gear to engage. The 214 back cover is held on by a threaded ring. The ring has 6 evenly spaced slots for a spanner wrench. If you have a wrench that works properly, back off the ring a few degrees and test the setting stem. Repeat this process until the hands move. If the case gasket is old it should be replaced in order to insure a good seal.

The geometry of these brand new gaskets is identical to that of the originals. They are genuine in the sense that they were made expressly for the 214. They were not made for something else and then found to be a near fit.

They are cut from modern Neoprene rubber to exact 214 specs. Neoprene seals better, has better resistance to solvents, won't harden, and holds its shape better than the original 60's vintage material.
